Vegetative Green Roofs

Sustainability is driving our designs and the way we view the world around us. We have spent that last 50 years overbuilding our cities, campuses and communities. Now it is time to reintegrate our landscape back into our dwellings through green roof design for balconies, plazas, roofs both commercial and residential.

“Every building can embrace the proper way to green up this place.”

– CI

Our favorite partner for vegetative roof systems and waterproofing solutions is Barrett Roofs. One of the oldest roofing and waterproofing companies in the US.

For over 10 decades the Barrett Company has had hands-on experience, professionally engineered products, and stems in the high-performance roofing and waterproofing markets.

Single Source

It is of utmost importance that when designing a green roof, we are designing for longevity and performance. When roofs are parts and pieced together with multiple manufacturers and trades involved the likelihood of a leak or problem occurring goes up and once the problem presents itself the litigation nightmare begins. This is why a single source warranty is so important on complicated projects. Protecting the building owner and design team from nightmare situations. Everything for a garden roof system is provided through one source with agreements between all manufacturers to have one warranty to cover the system and removal and replacement of the system in the event of disaster.

•Material Warranties: 5 to 30 years

•Overburden removal (same term as roofing)

•Labor and Material Warranties: 10 to 30 years

•System Warranties: usually includes labor and material

•Pavers (pressed paver freeze thaw)

•Insulation (retaining it R Value for 50 years)

•Growing Medium

•Plants  (So many year for plants)

•NDL: No Dollar Limit Warranties: 5 to 30 years

Historical Residential Renovation

Even historic buildings can embrace the change and introduce Garden Roofs and Plazas.

The Sky is the Limit

Full Park systems can be installed when it’s the right type of roof for the right building owner.

Mixed-Use Amenity Spaces

Every school, hospital, condo, hotel and apartment building should have a sustainable safe green space.

Pollination

We need pollinators to keep the world green and provide food for you and me. Unfortunately, we have overbuilt our cities and it is our time now to reintroduce the natural world back into our communities to enhance the lives of pollinators which enhances the world around us.

Stormwater Management

Our cities are flood prone because we are straining the stormwater systems. Whether we’re in the dry desert of Arizona or the island of Manhattan our cities flood. Everyone owning or developing buildings in major municipalities or campuses should be incorporating a vegetative water retention system.

Urban Heat Island Effect

It’s no question our cities are getting hotter. Why? Because we have removed saturated ground and replaced it with impervious surfaces. How do we combat the urban heat island effect? Vegetation on our plazas, balconies and roof levels.

Energy Efficiency

As energy bills continue to rise, any existing building owner and new building owner should be familiar with the benefits of energy efficient designs. Starting with vegetative roof systems and proper insulation use.
